Three main areas of application:
- They allow for slow shutter speeds, enabling the depiction of motion in the image through blurring, e.g. in waterfalls and streams, fountains, clouds or moving cars.
- They allow for wider apertures to achieve a shallower depth of field, which helps to clearly separate a subject, e.g. a portrait, from its background.
- They enable correctly exposed shots with film and video cameras that have fixed shutter speeds, even in bright environments such as snow and sandy beaches or under extremely bright lighting, whereas otherwise overexposure would occur.
But it is not just in photography; Hoya Pro ND filters also perform excellently in DSLR filming. As film cameras operate frame by frame with a constant exposure time, the stopping-down capability of the lenses is often insufficient for bright subjects to achieve well-balanced exposures. Using these filters gives you much greater creative freedom in choosing the aperture and exposure time, and makes long exposures possible even when filming.
When using ND filters and the resulting long exposure times, it is essential to use a good tripod, ideally in conjunction with a remote shutter release. The wide range of tripod models from Slik or other manufacturers are ideal for this purpose. Particular attention must also be paid to autofocus. Even modern cameras are still unable to cope with a strong ND filter and focus accurately. It is therefore important to switch off autofocus and switch to manual mode as soon as an ND filter has been attached. To determine the correct exposure time, however, the exposure should first be measured without the filter and then multiplied by the extension factor of the relevant filter (for example: 1/30 s x 1,000 = approx. 13 s).
