Hoya 67.0mm Variable Density II

The HOYA Variable Density Filter 3-400 has a neutral density range from ND3 (1.5 f-stops) to ND400 (8+ f-stops), which can be easily adjusted to the desired density by turning the front ring. HOYA Variable Density Filters use high-quality optical glass from HOYA.

ND filters (Neutral Density) appear grey and reduce the amount of light reaching the sensor or film without affecting the colour balance. Main applications:

  • enable long exposure times to depict movement in the image through blurring, e.g. with waterfalls and streams, fountains, clouds or moving cars.
  • enable wider apertures for a shallower depth of field, which helps to clearly separate a subject, e.g. a portrait, from its background.
  • have the effect of reducing the film’s sensitivity accordingly, so that even high-speed films (i.e. above ISO 400 at 27°C) can be used in bright daylight.
  • enable film and video cameras with fixed shutter speeds to take correct exposures even in bright environments such as snow and sandy beaches or under extremely bright lighting, whereas otherwise overexposure would occur.

For best results, HOYA recommends using a tripod when taking photographs with long exposure times
