Description & technical specifications of the Leica MP 0.72 Silver
Overview – A Mechanical Masterpiece
The Leica MP 0.72 is a purely mechanical rangefinder camera, handcrafted and designed to enable uncompromising photography – without the distraction of electronics
Only the light meter requires batteries; the rest functions entirely mechanically and is extremely robust
With its 0.72x magnification, the viewfinder offers a bright, clear view and automatically activates the appropriate framing lines for focal lengths between 28 mm and 135 mm
Mechanics & Features
Lens mount: Leica M bayonet, compatible with M lenses from 21–135 mm
Viewfinder & focusing screen: Bright illuminated frames with automatic parallax correction; alternative magnifications (0.58×, 0.85×) were available via special order
Exposure metering: TTL, selective, via a 12 mm silicon photodiode in the first shutter curtain. Metering range at ISO 100: EV -2 to 20, corresponding to approx. f/1 at 4 s to f/32 at 1/1000 s
Exposure control: Manual – shutter speeds from Bulb via 1 s to 1/1000 s; flash synchronisation at 1/50 s
Film setting: Manual, ISO selection from ISO 6 to ISO 6400
Viewfinder magnification & measuring base: 0.72× magnification with approx. 49.9 mm effective measuring base (theoretical: 69.25 mm × 0.72)

Dimensions: approx. 138 × 77 × 38 mm (5.4 × 3 × 1.5 inches)

All-metal housing, extremely durable and robust – ideal for continuous use
Manufactured in Germany, guaranteeing the highest precision and material quality
Year of release & variants
Launched in 2003. The MP builds on the classic Leica M tradition dating back to the M3
