Leofoto Ranger EF-224C Carbon Fibre Tripod with LH-25 Ball Head

The lightweight Leofoto Ranger EF-224C carbon fibre tripod is particularly well-suited for carrying in a bag. Its packed length is 470 mm. However, longer packed lengths generally allow for greater working heights; in this case, that’s up to 1,170 mm (without the attachable centre column). This carbon fibre tripod is ready for immediate use, as it comes as a set with a Leofoto LH-25 ball head, a screw-on and adjustable centre column, and a multi-tool. Everything is packed together in a practical carry bag. The maximum load capacity of both the tripod and the ball head is 6 kg each. This is easily sufficient for a DSLR camera with a medium telephoto zoom lens. The Ranger EF-224C carbon fibre tripod (732 g) and the LH-25 ball head (178 g) are so light, even with accessories included, that they prove to be the ideal companions for photography trips in the great outdoors.

Leofoto – the ultra-light yet extremely stable carbon tripods

The very essence of the compact and lightweight Leofoto tripods is nature itself. On days-long photography expeditions, every gram and every millimetre counts to minimise the volume and weight of your kit. However, all equipment must not only be space- and weight-saving, but also meet very high standards. Stability under all circumstances – that is the requirement. With their small diameters, the head plates of the Ranger series also fit into the space-saving concept. And because they are CNC-machined from strong aircraft-grade aluminium, they fit perfectly. The head plate screw has a 3/8” thread. The tripod legs, each consisting of four leg sections, slide smoothly and without twisting. They are secured by rubberised twist locks that are easy to grip. The rubber feet absorb unwanted vibrations. If necessary, they can be replaced with optional snow and sand feet.

It is by no means impractical that such a lightweight tripod does not have a built-in centre column. It is included in the set and can be taken along and screwed on as required. However, sometimes you just want to travel with the bare minimum of photographic equipment. That said, the centre column included in the set does increase the working height of the EF-224C carbon tripod by up to 315 mm – from 1,170 mm to a respectable 1,485 mm. On the other hand, the legs of the RF-224 carbon tripod can be spread so wide that they result in a working height of just 130 mm – a perfect base for macro photography just above the ground. The tripod legs each consist of four sections, with diameters of 22, 19, 16 and 13 mm.

Leofoto LH-25 ball head – very small, but strong and precise

Precisely machined from CNC-milled, black anodised aircraft-grade aluminium and featuring a built-in spirit level, this small ball head is included in the set. At first glance, you wouldn’t guess the strength of this ‘featherweight’ (weighing just 178 grams). Yet the Leofoto LH-25 ball head can handle a very respectable 6 kg load! The low profile of just 69 mm keeps the centre of gravity low. This also reduces unwanted vibrations. It features a 3/8” tripod thread and a large wing nut, the latter used to lock the ball (diameter 25 mm) in the desired position. Adjustment is smooth as silk and the 360° panorama function operates effortlessly. Precise adjustment is made easier by the scale on the tripod plate. Vertical tilt of the ball is possible up to 90°. Attaching and removing cameras is a breeze thanks to the built-in quick-release coupling, which includes a PU-25 Arca-Swiss-type QR camera plate.
