Flawless bokeh
The Plena produces perfectly round bokeh circles, even at an aperture of f/1.8. No onion-ring or cat’s-eye bokeh, no chromatic aberration and no vignetting to worry about.
Exquisite rendering
Point light sources sparkle as fine, rounded dots, before merging into the gently graded bokeh, which remains circular even in the furthest corners of the frame.
S-series Z-mount. The pinnacle.
Plena is designed for perfection and takes the S-series optics to a new level. From breathtaking sharpness to perfect bokeh, there is nothing else like it.
Outstanding anti-reflection and backlight control
Perfection begins with control. The NIKKOR Z 135mm f/1.8 S Plena masters light scattering with extraordinary finesse, eliminating flare and preventing stray light. The sharpness of the images will amaze you. The meso-amorphous coating is Nikon’s best anti-reflective coating. It prevents light from entering from diagonal and vertical directions, giving this full-frame telephoto lens exceptional control over ghosting and flare. The ARNEO coating also reduces ghosting and flare effects caused by vertical light incidence . If dramatic backlighting is part of your creative vision, you can shoot directly into the light source and still capture the sharpest and clearest images you can imagine. In night-time shots, point light sources such as stars and city lights are rendered round, sharp and clear.
Finest details. Captivating resolution.
The character of the Plena lies in its optical perfection. This is made possible by the Z-mount and the highest optical performance of any S-Line lens. The balance between precision and bokeh is so well achieved that you will create images of unparalleled artistry and depth. Even against complex backgrounds, the finest details such as hair or feathers are rendered with such astonishing sharpness, colour and contrast that you can almost feel them. Stars and city lights appear as perfectly circular highlights, free from sagittal coma and flare. Thanks to the compression at 135mm, subject separation in both photos and videos is significantly improved. Whether at f/1.8 or stopped down, you get razor-sharp details that blend seamlessly with the gently graded and wonderfully soft background and foreground bokeh.
Masterful optical design
With its distinctive optics and eleven rounded aperture blades, the NIKKOR Z 135mm f/1.8 S Plena is truly unique. Whether for stills or video – it redefines every expectation of a 135mm f/1.8 lens. The complex optical construction comprises 16 elements in 14 groups. Thanks to the large diameter of the Z-mount, which ensures optimal spacing between the elements, and the 11 rounded aperture blades, which minimise diffraction blur, aberrations are completely suppressed at every aperture setting. Among the advanced optical technologies is the front element made from Nikon’s high-dispersion SR glass, which, by focusing on shorter wavelengths, compensates for colour aberrations that are difficult to correct. An aspherical lens corrects sagittal coma and spherical aberrations whilst simultaneously compensating for field curvature. Even at a maximum aperture of f/1.8, you achieve excellent sharpness, crisp contrast, superb rendering of point light sources and perfect bokeh without any discernible colour fringing.
Ample peripheral light even at f/1.8
The Nikon Z mount has opened up new possibilities for optical design. Plena utilises them all to achieve peripheral brightness at wide-open aperture that surpasses any other S-series lens . The shorter flange focal distance of the Z mount allows large lenses to be positioned at the rear of the lens, where they can direct more light onto the sensor. The large internal diameter allows light to flow naturally as it travels through the lens to the sensor. Combined with Plena’s incredible imaging performance, this results in perfectly even brightness across the entire frame with no visible light fall-off at the edges.
Fast, precise autofocus
High resolution leaves no room for error. Precision is crucial. The NIKKOR Z 135mm f/1.8 S Plena medium telephoto lens masters this challenge in both stills and video with a reliable autofocus system. With two lens groups that move in precise synchronisation, Plena focuses quickly, even at the widest aperture, where the sensor plane is thinner. Rapid, continuous adjustments ensure a razor-sharp focus point. The aberrations typical of telephoto lenses are corrected at all distances: from close-up to infinity. With autofocus performance like this, no screen is too big. No detail too small. Every aperture, every light: place your subject crystal-clear against the enchanting bokeh so perfectly rendered by the Plena.
